The American Heart Association recommends we consume fish, especially fatty fish like tuna and salmon, at least twice per week. Fish can provide several valuable nutrients such as selenium and B vitamins. Fatty fish are a great sources of omega -3 fatty acids, vitamin D and sometimes calcium. When sourced responsibility they can be a more sustainable protein option over other meats like beef and pork.

Captain D's healthy grilled menu family dinnerOn a recent lunch date with a family member I was pleasantly surprised with the healthier menu options at popular fast food chain Captain D’s. They now offer an entire grilled fish menu including white fish, shrimp, salmon, and tilapia. I’m a salmon lover and most never pass on the opportunity to get a boost of omega 3’s from a good piece of wild Alaskan salmon. I was also impressed that I could choose from healthier side options like green beans and broccoli at no extra cost.  You’ll notice Captain D’s wild salmon looks different than a farmed salmon filet served at most casual restaurants. Farm raised salmon is thicker, fattier and brighter in color which makes is more appealing to most restaurant goers. Despite is mild lack of appeal Captain D’s salmon was thankfully lightly seasoned and quite tasty. It’s a great value with two sides, rice and a roll for less than ten dollars and under 500 calories! You can even order grilled fish in the kid’s meals. Can’t get the kids on board with grilled fish? You can still order a vegetable with those chicken tenders without paying more money.
