Have you ever wanted to take a step back in time? Maybe visit a place that reminds you of simpler times and has tasty treats as well? My family recently found a hidden gem located a beautiful 40-ish minute drive from our area of Nashville. Sweet Charlotte is located west of Nashville in the town of Charlotte, TN and perfect to add as a stop for your next Staycation.
Sweet Charlotte is a sweet little store tucked into a hillside. It has the main candy store, a food grill, sheltered picnic tables, and a beautiful mural outside. There is a historic cabin, wishing well, and historic family grave yards on the property to explore as well. Often on Saturdays. there will be live music being played on one of the porches of the smaller buildings. You will feel like you have gone back into time when penny candies, soda shops, and hamburger stands ruled.
In the main store, you will find penny candies of all types, taffy in many flavors, novelty candies from days gone by, gourmet popcorn in amazingly yummy flavors, and a wall of “retro sodas” – glass bottles of root beer, cream soda or cola flavors. There is a display of homemade fudge and roasted nuts that always tempts me. Our family loves to check out the new flavors of popcorn which you can sample for free. The staff is great at helping you find a yummy flavor you will enjoy. I highly recommend getting the refill bucket if you buy popcorn, because you will return to get it filled many times over if you are a popcorn fan. Our favorites are the Peanut Butter Munch and Lemon Popcorn.
Once, we pick out some new popcorn to take home. We will grab an ice cold root beer out of one of the coolers and head to the checkout to order our root beer floats, a slush for my son, and fresh french fries for my daughter. We like to take them outside to one of the umbrella picnic tables and enjoy the live music. It is a nice way to spend part of a Saturday. The root beers are so good. We normally take a four-pack home to enjoy later.
Sweet Charlotte is all-in-all a fun family outing. You can get a nice treat or two to enjoy there or even a meal – they have hamburgers, hotdogs, and more on-site from Charlotte’s Grill. Or you can load up on candies and popcorn to enjoy at home. The store also has local gift items and they ship their popcorn which also would make a great gift. I highly recommend taking the drive to Charlotte, TN and enjoying some yumminess in a fun throwback setting of simpler days.
