What a great way to kick off Mother’s day attending an amazing play with another mother in my life. Especially when you laugh out loud, cheer, clap along, and even shed a few tears, all in one ninety minute time frame.
Sue Fabicsh truly brought the good, the bad, and the parts no one tells you about motherhood to life on stage. Kim Nygren does an amazing job directing the talented cast of Sue Fabisch, Jacylyn Brown, Corrie Miller, and Jennifer Withcomb-Oliva. The music by Johnny Rodgers adds a nice background for the amazing vocals of the ladies throughout the musical.
I loved that it is in a small theatre with seating on three sides. The smaller place allows you to actually feel like a part of what is going on during the fast-paced play. Even cooler is that the characters actually include the audience in a few of the songs, which makes for a fun atmosphere. The cast is a powerful group of four talented ladies. They bring the songs and lines to life with every turn of the head, raised eyebrow, and stellar dance moves (especially during “Moms on Strike”). Their beautiful voices were amazing to listen to for the ninety minute show. I loved that the play included a single mom’s view, a stay-at-home mom’s view, a working mom, and a pregnant women’s view point as well. The varied experiences of the ladies means every mom in the audience will understand or feel connected to one of the characters.
The play is based around three more experienced moms throwing a baby shower for a new mom-to-be, Amy. Her sweet “I’m Having a Baby” and “Now I Know” songs are touching and may bring tears to your eyes. However, songs like “My Minivan,” “We Leak,” and “Costco Queen” will have you laughing at loud and holding your stomach from all the laughter. I think my favorite two songs had to be “Moms on Strike”, and “The Kids are Finally Asleep.” I mean come on, who has not dreamed of refusing to clean, cook, or even get out of bed on some of those early mornings when you really just want to go back to sleep. I also know I am not the only mom that skips happily through my house when the kids are finally in bed for the night. It finally means I might actually be able to go to the bathroom alone for the next few hours. Can I get an Amen?!!
I highly recommend grabbing a few of the amazing women in your life and heading to Nashville’s beautiful TPAC theatre to see this musical. The show runs through May 17. You will not be disappointed. I also recommend making a night or day of it, grabbing a tasty meal, and relaxing without the kids for a few hours. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mom’s and mom’s to be out there!
Motherhood the Musical
Having a baby is just the beginning… motherhood is for life. In the original play Motherhood the Musical®, four women share their insights, challenges and pleasures at a baby shower. In 90 minutes of fun, you’ll get a peek into the powerful friendship of Amy, a soon-to-be first-time mom; Brooke, a hard-working lawyer; Barb, a stressed-out mother of five; and Tasha, a single mom seeking to balance work, her family and her divorce.
Motherhood the Musical is a funny, yet loving look at being a mom at any age. It’s climbing the emotional mountain only to find that there’s laundry at the top. It’s discovering how powerful your love can be and how quickly they grow up. It’s helping them find their way and not losing yours. It’s about laughing and crying, craziness and calm, smiles and tears . . . and all before breakfast.
Tickets are on sale at TPAC.org. For more information, go to http://mommymusic.com/motherhood/
